The Dakar School of Myology
The Dakar School of Myology offers training and education to all those interested in neuromuscular diseases in Senegal and the West African region. The first edition took place on 23-24 February 2023 at the Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) in Dakar. This edition brought together international and local experts in neuromuscular disorders in a two-day training programme with theoretical and practical sessions. The activity was officially endorsed by TREAT-NMD and the Senegalese Association of Neurologists. More than 80 doctors in training, senior doctors, nurses and physiotherapists attended the activity. On the last day, a practical activity with patients and families affected by neuromuscular diseases took place at Centre Hospitalier National Universitaire (CHNU) de Fann.
Academic endorsement
The Dakar School of Myology was endorsed by TREAT-NMD and the Senegalese Neurology Association. TREAT-NMD (www.treat-nmd.org) is a global network for the neuromuscular field that provides an infrastructure to ensure that the most promising new therapies reach patients as quickly as possible. Since its launch in January 2007 the network’s focus has been on the development of tools that industry, clinicians and scientists need to bring novel therapeutic approaches through preclinical development and into the clinic, and on establishing best-practice care for neuromuscular patients worldwide. The mission of the Senegalese Neurology Association is to improve the health and well-being of people with neurological disorders in Senegal and on the African continent.
Academic programme
The programme covered the most important topics in the field of neuromuscular diseases, as well as the latest clinical, therapeutic and scientific updates. A large part of the programme was of a practical nature with discussion of clinical cases and hands-on workshops with patients and families affected by neuromuscular diseases.
